The sign of Capricorn provides the bridge between Man and the Supreme and now the individual is consciously co-operating with the divine plan. It is an initiation into a different stage of life. The newly-emerging Man realises that on the spiritual path, as in the material world, there are goals to be reached (Capricorn is the cardinal earth sign and Mars is exalted there).
Initiations are painful. This stage in the cosmic cycle is one of taking on problems, of deliberately making it difficult for yourself in order to evoke any negative karma and deal with it now. When it has been dealt with you can move beyond your own problems to a state of more universal awareness. Paying the price for past actions (karma) is not an easy choice. Qualities of renunciation and self-sacrifice are being developed in order to activate the deeper levels of the soul. Capricorn is the sign of duty and hard work and Capricorn's temperament fits them for working. Capricorns are very steady people, serious and with a heavy sense of responsibility. They have a tendency to suffer from depression.
Makara is the crocodile and fittingly Capricorn is the sign opposite Cancer. Whereas the crab lives in water and moves towards earth, the crocodile lives on the riverbank but is also at home in the water (the universal soul). The life of the crocodile symbolises the Capricorn stage, where you are still living in the material world but moving along the final path towards the submergence of your individuality in the universal sea.
Saturn rules Capricorn
Saturn will act like its true self in its own sign but Capricorn brings out its heaviest qualities. Saturn is the graha of karma and in Capricorn the individual is faced with the results of actions in past lives. It also represents austerity and denial, acting through restriction and limitations to force people to change.
Mars is exalted in Capricorn
In the sign of Mars' greatest enemy! But he relishes being amongst his foes - and you will need his courage to face the challenge of Capricorn.
Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn
The heavy demands of Capricorn require the right kind of action. It is not a time for expansion, optimism or looking forward. Jupiter's rituals and philosophical debates cannot flourish and are not appropriate. Grahas in Capricorn act more slowly and feel heavyweight.
